big bellies and teriyaki chicken bowls

We weren't sure what to expect as we stood amongst a large population of Asians....there were people there of all ages; little Asian children sat on the sidewalk doing homework (that's why Asians are so smart. The American children waiting were playing with action figures- hm). There were giant flags with Japanese writing on them, amazing Japanese food being cooked all around us, and precious little elderly Asians that seemed barely able to walk. We waited outside of the doors for almost 2 hours with our excitement brewing. After assembling into lines to enter, a drummer came out to announce the beginning of the show. We grabbed our green tea, teriyaki chicken and rice, our Tshirts and our fan.

We actually learned a lot about Sumo traditions and customs. They showed us their routine stretches and our neughbors sitting next to us explained the rituals they do during the match. They drink a shot of Sake and throw salt in the air and onto the ring- the ring is actually clay. I think it's clay. Whoever gets their opponent to step outside of the ring, or slams them to the ground, wins! The Russian men were unbelievably enormous...it was actually surprising how gigantic they were. They also lift their legs and slam them down to intimidate their opponent. After facing each other, it is my understanding that the wrestler with seniority can choose to intimidate his opponent by walking away, throwing more salt, and slamming down his leg. It's a game of intimidation- the bigger, the badder, the stronger, the better. Very interesting.

They bagan the show by wrestling the future stars of sumo. It was adorable. The children were towered by the Sumo wrestlers but sometimes the big guys would let a kid win. The crowd loved it. I also thought it was interesting that there were women dressed as Geishas sitting on floor seats which were $420/seat. Hm. David and I found the whole even fascinating. It was amazing. More pictures and videos here!

Sumo is my favorite sport ever. Who nees football? Sumo is amazing.

big trips, grad school, and birthdays.

New York was a fun a trip. I was glad when it was over though- I missed David terribly and I felt so small in such a big city. So many things happen at once, all around, and there were so many smells...every step I took came with a new smell. I almost gagged a few times. Jaymi's wedding was beautiful, they're so in love. I'm very happy for them. She married a Dr.! Marrying a doctor is something every girl jokes about..but she really did it. Kosj is from Ghana Africa. He came here to study and became a doctor and has done a lot of medical research. He's currently getting his MD and now doing his residency. He got his doctorate for medical research before becoming an MD-- I think that's how it goes. Anyway, it was a beautiful wedding and I was happy to be there. It was also while I was in New York that I found out CSULB was interested in me for the advanced standing program for my Master's of Social Work. So...MSW here I come. I came home from NY to beautiful lilies and a Vera Bradley backpack- I have the most wonderful husband in the world! Our lives are definitely different and more busy. This time next year, I'll have my degree and we'll be making big big plans! This next year will be interesting...my school is really liberal and "politically correct" which I find exhausting. I guess this is the part where I rely on my undergrad teachings...I'm really thankful for my education at Southeastern.

David is applying for jobs for nights and weekends. I'm not home as much as I used to be (obviously) so he would rather work than sit around at home. I think he's really interested in Home Depot. We'll see. I'm proud of him. He's been really great and very supportive of me. I just love him.

We continue to go to our favorite puppy store. We went to a new one and they wanted $4,000 for a bull dog. Our favorite store charges $2,800. Horses are cheaper than bulldogs. Unbelievable.

That's it for now. David will post about his birthday. It was a fun one!!!! One of his prizes was the movie Lonesome Dove. We went to sleep watching Lonesome Dove and we woke up watching Lonesome Dove. David loves it. It wears me out. We go to the Sumo Wrestling tournament tonight- We're very excited.

Cheerio!
